How License Keys Work

Key format

Every JuryBinder license key is a 19-character string in this format:

JB-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX

The alphabet excludes ambiguous characters (0 and O, 1 and I and l) so keys are easy to read and type without errors. Keys are not case-sensitive.

Credits

A license key carries a number of trial credits depending on the plan purchased. Each credit is consumed when you create a new case file. Opening, working in, and saving an existing case file never consumes a credit.

Once a trial credit is used, it is permanently tied to that case file's unique ID. If you open the same case file again on a different device, no additional credit is consumed.

Activation

When you enter your license key for the first time, JuryBinder:

  1. Sends the key to the JuryBinder license server
  2. Validates that the key is active and not expired
  3. Receives a signed session token (JWT) valid for 30 days
  4. Stores the token in your browser's local storage

After this, JuryBinder does not contact the license server again until the session token needs to be refreshed (see below).

The 30-day check-in

Session tokens are valid for 30 days. JuryBinder silently attempts to refresh the token in the background when it's approaching expiry. This check-in requires a brief internet connection.

If the token expires and JuryBinder cannot reach the server (because you're offline), you'll see a gentle notice asking you to connect before creating a new case. You can always open and work in existing case files regardless of license state — an attorney in a courtroom is never locked out of their case file.

Creating a new case

When you click New Case, JuryBinder contacts the license server to:

  1. Verify your license has remaining credits
  2. Register a unique trial ID for the new case
  3. Decrement your credit count by one
  4. Return a refreshed session token

This requires internet. If you're preparing for trial in a location without reliable internet, create your case file before you go.

Working across multiple devices

Your license key works on any number of devices. Each device activates independently using the same key. If you work on the same case file on multiple devices (for example, you and co-counsel each have the file open), the same trial ID is registered on both — no additional credit is consumed.

Expiry

License keys expire two years after the date of issue. Unused credits expire with the key. The expiry date is visible in Settings → License.

What to do if you run out of credits

If your credit count reaches zero, the New Case button is disabled. You can still open and work in any existing case files. To purchase additional credits, contact support@jurybinder.com or visit jurybinder.com.

Credits don't expire mid-trial

Credits are consumed at case creation, not per session. Once a case is registered, you can work in it indefinitely without consuming additional credits — even after your license key expires.
