How license keys work¶
Key format¶
Every JuryBinder license key is a 19-character string in this format:
The alphabet excludes ambiguous characters (0 and O, 1 and I and l) so keys are easy to read and type without errors. Keys are not case-sensitive.
Credits¶
A license key carries a number of trial credits depending on the plan you purchased. Each credit is consumed when you create a new case file. Opening, working in, and saving an existing case file never consumes a credit.
Once a trial credit is used, it is permanently tied to that case file's unique ID. If you open the same case file on a different device, no additional credit is consumed.
Activation¶
When you enter your license key for the first time, JuryBinder:
- Sends the key to the JuryBinder license server.
- Validates that the key is active and not expired.
- Receives a signed session token (JWT) valid for 30 days.
- Stores the token in your browser's local storage.
After activation, JuryBinder does not contact the license server again until the session token needs to be refreshed.
The 30-day check-in¶
Session tokens are valid for 30 days. JuryBinder silently attempts to refresh the token in the background when it approaches expiration. This check-in requires a brief internet connection.
If the token expires and JuryBinder can't reach the server (because you're offline), you'll see a notice asking you to connect before creating a new case. You can always open and work in existing case files regardless of license state — an attorney in a courtroom is never locked out of their case data.
Creating a new case¶
When you select New Case, JuryBinder contacts the license server to:
- Verify your license has remaining credits.
- Register a unique trial ID for the new case.
- Decrement your credit count by one.
- Return a refreshed session token.
This step requires internet. If you're preparing for trial in a location without reliable internet, create your case file before you leave.
Working across multiple devices¶
Your license key works on any number of devices. Each device activates independently using the same key. If you and co-counsel each have the same case file open on separate devices, the same trial ID is registered on both — no additional credit is consumed.
For details on sharing case files between devices and merging contributions, see Collaboration.
Viewing your license details¶
Select the colored dot and your name in the header to open Settings. The License section shows:
- Your license key (partially masked)
- The email associated with the license
- Credits remaining
- Token expiration date
Expiration¶
License keys expire two years after the date of issue. Unused credits expire with the key. The expiration date is visible in Settings → License.
What to do if you run out of credits¶
If your credit count reaches zero, the New Case button is disabled. You can still open and work in any existing case files. To purchase additional credits, contact support@jurybinder.com or visit jurybinder.com.
Credits don't expire mid-trial
Credits are consumed at case creation, not per session. Once a case is registered, you can work in it indefinitely without consuming additional credits — even after your license key expires.
